Hunter Biden to plead guilty in a deal that averts time behind bars in a tax and gun case!

Are Hunter Biden's international dealings a fair concern in presidential election? Americans weigh in | Fox News

Hunter Biden

Dear Commons Community,

Hunter Biden has struck a deal with federal prosecutors, agreeing to plead guilty for failing to pay his income taxes and reaching a pretrial agreement on a felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user. The plea deal likely puts an end to the Justice Department’s multiyear investigation into President Biden’s 52-year-old second son, who as part of the agreement will receive probation and avoid jail time.  As reported by various media outlets.

“With the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved,” Chris Clark, attorney for Hunter Biden, said in a statement. “I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward.”

In December 2020, the U.S. attorney’s office in Delaware announced it was investigating Hunter Biden for possible income tax violations.

The investigation was led by Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was appointed by then-President Donald Trump in 2018.

Hunter Biden was the target of regular attacks by Trump during the 2020 campaign. The former president and his Republican allies criticized Hunter Biden’s position on the board of a Ukrainian energy company while Joe Biden was vice president, suggesting it had corruptly influenced U.S. foreign policy. Hunter Biden has acknowledged that he had “poor judgment” in taking the role

According to court filings made public on Tuesday, Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to two federal tax offenses, both misdemeanors, for willfully failing to pay his federal income taxes in 2017 and 2018. He has also entered into a pretrial agreement to the felony charge that he possessed a handgun in October 2018 despite knowing that he was a drug user.

Hunter Biden has acknowledged struggling with addiction following the 2015 death of his brother, Beau Biden.

He has also since fully repaid back taxes and fines, including $2 million he reportedly paid to the federal government last year.

The White House issued a brief statement on Tuesday morning following the report of the deal.

“The President and First Lady love their son and support him as he continues to rebuild his life,” the statement read. “We will have no further comment.”

The president has largely avoided weighing in publicly on his son’s case.

“I love him,” Biden said last month following a report that the Department of Justice was on the verge of charging Hunter Biden. “He’s on the straight and narrow, and he has been for a couple years now. And I’m just so proud of him.”

While the legal case against Hunter Biden may soon be resolved, the political attacks will undoubtedly continue, as Trump and other Republican hopefuls try to use the episode to shine an unflattering spotlight on the president, his family and the Justice Department.

Congressional Republicans slammed the plea deal and vowed to forge ahead with investigations into the Bidens in the GOP-led House.

Submersible with Five People on Board Vanishes on Dive to See the Titanic Wreck!

What we know about the Titanic tourist vessel missing in the Atlantic | CBC News

Dear Commons Community,

This post comes courtesy of this morning’s  New York Times.

“A submersible vessel carrying five people slipped into the dark waters of the North Atlantic, heading to what remained of the Titanic, 12,500 feet under the sea. The expedition, like many before it, was a testament to the enduring fascination with the storied ship that struck an iceberg and sank off Newfoundland more than a century ago.

But one hour and 45 minutes into the dive on Sunday morning, the craft went missing, setting off a search by rescue crews from two countries and adding another layer of mystery and intrigue to the Titanic wreck.

Among those on board was Hamish Harding, a British aviation tycoon who took part in Blue Origin’s fifth human spaceflight last year and holds several Guinness World Records, including for the longest time spent traversing the deepest part of the ocean on a single dive.

In social media posts, Mr. Harding, 58, had written excitedly about the upcoming trip. “I am proud to finally announce that I joined @oceangateexped for their RMS TITANIC mission as a mission specialist on the sub going down to the Titanic,” he said on Instagram, adding, “More expedition updates to follow, IF the weather holds.”

On Monday, officials had no explanation for why the craft, called the Titan, lost contact with its Canadian expedition ship on the surface, MV Polar Prince, about 400 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

But a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard, Rear Admiral John Mauger, said at a news conference that the people on the vessel, which was designed to survive an emergency for 96 hours, would theoretically have at least 70 to 96 hours of oxygen before the situation became dire.

“We’re using that time making the best use of every moment of that time,” he said.

The Coast Guard was coordinating with the Canadian authorities and commercial vessels to help search an area approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod, at a depth of roughly 13,000 feet, he said. Sonar buoys were deployed into the water, and the expedition ship was using sonar to try to locate the submersible. Aircraft from the United States and Canada, along with surface vessels, were scanning the waves in case the submersible had surfaced and lost communications, he said.

God be with passengers and crew!

Fox News Analyst Brit Hume Describes Trump’s “Incoherent” Interview with Bret Baier (Video)!

Donald Trump and Fox News Anchor Bret Baier Clash in Heated Interview

Dear Commons Community,

Last night, I watched Bret Baier interview Donald Trump.  I thought Trump’s answers for the most part were a rambling mess.  Brit Hume, Fox News analyst, came to the same conclusion.

Here is a recap of Brit Hume’s comments courtesy of the Huffington Post.

Longtime Fox News analyst Brit Hume didn’t hold back on Monday after Donald Trump’s performance during an interview with the right-wing network.

“His answers on the matters of the law seem to me to verge on incoherent,” he told Bret Baier, who spoke with the former president.

Trump, who pled not guilty last week to 37 charges related to the classified documents scandal, said he didn’t give back the material when subpoenaed because he’s been “very busy” and hasn’t had the time to go through the boxes to sort out his personal items.

Hume attempted to sum up Trump’s comments to Baier:

“He seemed to be saying that the documents were really his, and that he didn’t give them back when he was requested to do so and when they were subpoenaed because, y’know, he wasn’t ready to because he hadn’t sorted them and separated the classified information or whatever from his golf shirts or whatever he was saying.”

Eventually, Hume practically gave up trying to decipher it.

“It was not altogether clear what he was saying, but he seemed to believe that the documents were his, that he had declassified them ― evidence to the contrary ― and therefore he could do whatever he wanted with them,” he said. “I don’t think it’s gonna hold up in court.”

Hume also noted that Baier gave Trump a chance to deliver a message to the suburban female voters that turned against him in 2020.

“His answer was to talk about how he didn’t lose the 2020 election,” Hume noted. “I don’t think that’s an appealing message for the future.”

He said the interview probably didn’t go over very well among those trying to advise the former president.

“I’m sure his legal and political advisers were wincing all the way through his answers on both those points.” he concluded.

See video of Hume’s comments below.

Gavin Newsom Schools Sean Hannity on the Economy in Fox News Interview!

Gavin Newsom, Sean Hannity Talk Ron DeSantis, Homeless Crisis, More On Fox News – Deadline

Dear Commons Community,

California Gov. Gavin Newsom refused to bow out in defense of his home state as he pushed back at Fox News host Sean Hannity during a  portion of their interview.

Newsom, in previously-aired footage of the interview, didn’t hold back his thoughts on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decisions on migrants while he also went to bat for President Joe Biden.

Hannity hit the governor with questions on business in California before Newsom fired back at claims that one company – Tesla – abandoned their HQ in the state to “save money.”

“They moved their headquarters back. They moved their R&D world headquarters back just three weeks ago. Why did they do that?” Newsom asked.

“They’re moving to increase their profits and save money because you tax too much,” the host replied.

“Because we created the conditions where they flourish and then they get to a point of maturity and they get to a point of becoming multinational companies,” Newsom added of his home state.

“Because some find greener pastures or are looking for defensive postures as it relates to economic risk. But there’s thousands – we have a 47% increase in business startups this year compared to last year.”

Hannity later argued that businesses were “paying that high tax bill” in the state before the California governor went after the host’s take.

“California is on its way to becoming the fourth-largest economy in the world. What are you arguing for? Mississippi’s economic policy?” asked Newsom as he spoke over Hannity’s attempts to interject.

“Literally, that’s what you’re arguing for. The great Sam Brownback’s Kansas policy? It was a debacle, no economic growth. Seventy one percent of the GDP in America are [in] blue counties with progressive policies. Seventy one percent of the country’s wealth. Seven of the top-ten dependent states are your states. We’re subsidizing your states, Sean, because of your policies.”

Newsom has it right!

We Celebrate Juneteenth Today!

Participants march in the Juneteenth celebration parade, sponsored by the Masjid Malcolm Shabazz, through the streets of Harlem in New York on Saturday, June 18, 2010. Juneteenth, which refers to June 19, 1865, is celebrated as the day the news of the Emancipation reached Galveston, Texas brought by General Gordon Granger and a force of Union soldiers. Their arrival took place 2-1/2 years after Lincoln declared American slaves free on Sept. 22, 1862. (© Richard B. levine) Photo is black and white.

Dear Commons Community,

Juneteenth commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Tex., to inform enslaved African Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were free. Granger’s news came two months after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House and more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Long celebrated in African American communities—particularly in the South—Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

Happy Father’s Day!

75 Best Father's Day Quotes For Dad

Dear Commons Community,

On this day, we honor our dads who do so much for us.  My dad, Amadeo,  died fifty years ago in 1973, and there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. He worked in a warehouse just off the docks on West 55th Street in Manhattan for much of his adult life.  He could have been in a scene in the Marlon Brando movie, On the Waterfront. He never graduated high school but was very smart in many important ways including instilling in my brothers and me the importance of education.

I will always love him!

Fox News parts ways with Alexander McCaskill, producer behind ‘wannabe dictator’ Biden chyron!

Fox News producer behind chyron calling Biden a 'wannabe dictator' parts ways with network | The Independent

Dear Commons Community,

Alexander McCaskill, the Fox News producer responsible for an on-screen graphic that called President Biden a “wannabe dictator” has parted ways with the conservative network.

McCaskill, a longtime producer for ousted Fox News host Tucker Carlson, wrote the line, “Wannabe Dictator Speaks At the White House After Having His Political Rival Arrested,” which caused a stir Tuesday when it appeared at the end of the program “Fox News Tonight.”

The chyron appeared under side-by-side footage of Biden and former President Trump. Earlier in the day, Trump was arraigned in Miami on 37 counts related to mishandling of classified documents.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times.

McCaskill appeared in an Instagram photo Thursday morning showing him with a cardboard box outside of Fox News headquarters. He had served as managing editor and senior producer of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and remained on staff after Carlson was pulled from his prime-time slot on April 24.

Who is Alex McCaskill, former Tucker Carlson producer fired by Fox News?

“Today was my last day at FOX. It’s been a wild 10 years and it was the best place I’ve ever worked because of the great people I met. But the time has come,” McCaskill’s Instagram post said. “I asked them to let me go and they finally did.”

Carlson, who did not mention McCaskill by name, said in a Twitter video posted Thursday that the producer resigned and “offered to stay for the customary two weeks, but Fox told him to clear out his desk and leave immediately.”

Two people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to comment publicly confirmed McCaskill’s departure and that he was responsible for the Biden chyron.

A Fox News representative did not comment on the matter. The network previously said the chyron was pulled shortly after it appeared and was “addressed,” but offered no further explanation.

While Fox News is typically highly critical of the Biden administration, the chyron was considered shocking and was widely criticized on social media. The White House also responded the next day, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referencing the network’s recent $787-million settlement paid to Dominion Voting Systems to end a defamation suit.

“There are probably 787 million things that I can say about this that was wrong about what we saw last night,” Jean-Pierre said.

McCaskill is a defendant in a lawsuit filed by former Fox News producer Abby Grossberg, who said she was subjected to a hostile work environment while working on Carlson’s program.

Fox News was wise to let McCaskill go!

IBM, Quantum Computing, and Noise Mitigation!

A model of the interior of a quantum computer in the form of a tower with several stories of metallic and gold-colored wires.

Dear Commons Community,

IBM announced earlier this week that it took a major step forward in resolving some of the “noise” problem with quantum computers.  This noise can cause calculation errors  and is often caused by imperfect control signals, interference from the environment [especially temperature fluctuation], and unwanted interactions between qubits, which are the building blocks of a quantum computer.  IBM indicated that it had mitigated [not solved] to a degree the noise problem in its quantum computers.  The New York Times had a featured article on Wednesday describing IBM’s announcement that gets a bit into the technological weeds.  Regardless, if what IBM claims is true, it is a major step forward for quantum computing development.

S.E. Cupp: Talk of Pardoning Donald Trump – He tore America apart for his own gain and giving him a pass will not heal the nation!

SE Cupp to Democrats: Shame on you | CNN Politics

Dear Commons Community,

Columnist S.E. Kupp had a piece yesterday blasting those in the Republican party proposing a pardon for Donald Trump should he be convicted in the Mar-A-Lago classified documents case.   Entitled, The Pollyanna promise of pardoning Donald Trump: He has torn America apart for his own gain and giving him a pass will not heal the nation, she comments:

“Let’s be clear about one thing: Donald Trump should not be pardoned.

Trump is accused of multiple criminal offenses, and potentially has more awaiting him. He was one of the most divisive, self-absorbed, abusive, and power-hungry presidents in history, and one who almost never put the country or the Constitution before his own overweening ego.

He spread dangerous lies that put Americans in real danger, and he incited violence that led to a rise in right-wing extremism and even actual violence on Jan. 6, 2021. He continues to lie about the 2020 election, and foment hate against his political opponents, the criminal justice system, the intelligence community, the media, and anyone else who would get in his way.

He’s alleged to have threatened national security by willfully mishandling classified documents. And he promoted and embraced anti-American autocrats like Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Hungary’s Viktor Orban, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

None of this should be pardoned. These aren’t minor infractions, they’re some of the worst offenses a leader can commit. It’s a joke — an offensive one — to argue any of this should be forgiven.

But it’s an even bigger joke to pretend this would be “for the good of the country.”

The idea that pardoning Trump would do anything to make things less “intense,” Americans less “divided,” or the country “good” is absurd. Trump and his supporters will continue their war of retribution, their dangerous conspiracy theories, their destructive rhetoric, their politics of revenge, and their obsession with owning the libs whether he’s in jail or shuffling around Mar-A-Lago bragging about the classified documents he used to keep in his bathroom.”

She is so right!  Her entire column is below!

The Pollyanna promise of pardoning Donald Trump: He has torn America apart for his own gain and giving him a pass will not heal the nation

By S.E. Cupp

New York Daily News

Jun 15, 2023 at 12:00 pm

“It’s an idea whose time is inevitably coming for Republican presidential candidates — pardoning former President Donald J. Trump.”

That was National Review editor Rich Lowry in Politico this week, echoing others on the right who have decided that if Trump is convicted of any of the crimes he’s been accused of, he should be pardoned — get this — for the good of the country.

As Lowry puts it, “the idea of pardoning Trump is a sensible one that, depending on the exact circumstances, truly could serve the public interest…. Having a former president stand trial in a federal criminal case, and potentially spend the rest of his life in jail, is only going to make things more intense and the country more divided.”

Lowry’s hardly alone.

At least two of his opponents in the Republican primary have suggested the same.

Vivek Ramaswamy has floated the idea of making every GOP presidential rival pledge to pardon Trump should he be convicted, and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley say she would be “inclined in favor of a pardon,” because, “When you look at a pardon, the issue is less about guilt and more about what’s good for the country.”

A Washington Post column penned by two American Enterprise Institute conservatives suggests President Biden needs to “deliver on his promise to heal the country,” by pardoning Trump.

Let’s be clear about one thing: Donald Trump should not be pardoned.

Trump and his supporters will continue their war of retribution, their dangerous conspiracy theories, their destructive rhetoric, their politics of revenge, and their obsession with owning the libs whether he’s in jail or shuffling around Mar-A-Lago bragging about the classified documents he used to keep in his bathroom.

Just imagine everything that would have to happen to buy into this Pollyanna fantasy that a pardon would heal the country.

In this fictional world, Trump drops all the talk of election rigging, apologizes for the terrible things he’s said and the criminal things he’s done, and stops fomenting hatred and inciting violence to avenge his perceived political persecution.

Then imagine Republicans in Congress like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gossar stop trafficking in bigoted and antisemitic rhetoric, stop pushing bills meant to punish women, LGBTQ, religious minorities and immigrants.

Then imagine his friends in QAnon dropping all their conspiracy theories about Democratic pedophile rings and the resurrected JFK Jr. running with Trump in 2024, and suddenly decide that facts do matter after all.

Then imagine his buddies in the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, the neo-Nazis, antisemites, and the white supremacists give up on their projects to purify the American ethno-national identity, and instead embrace our ethnic, racial and religious diversity.

Then imagine all the right-wing talk radio and cable news personalities stop pedaling divisive culture wars nonsense and autocratic garbage like book bans, where Fox News refrains from chyrons calling the incumbent president a “wannabe dictator,” and primetime hosts don’t lie to their viewers, by their own admission.

Does anyone truly believe that pardoning Trump, after convicting him and potentially jailing him, would trigger this social, cultural, and political undoing? That it would reverse the decade of destruction Trump has carefully nurtured? That it would suddenly endear Biden or Democrats to Trump, his supporters, Republicans, right-wing media, QAnon, white supremacists, and all the disparate groups determined to keep the country divided?

With all due respect, that is one magic pardon.
